Hidden Figures

We are excited to announce the 2 Districts, 1 Book reading initiative that will kick off on March 2nd to coincide with the 2020 National Read Across America Day.

All of Region 6 and Litchfield public school students are asked to join administration, teachers and staff in reading the national best selling biography, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, by Margot Lee Shetterly.

Families with students in Kindergarten through grade four will receive the picture book version of the biography. Students in fifth through eighth grade will read the young readers edition. High school students can participate as well and read the original biography on their own or attend an after school book club.

Our goal is for every family to enjoy the book together and engage in several fun activities connected to the science, math, and history that is represented in the biography. Families can access a suggested reading
timeline and related resources online here: http://bit.ly/2Districts1BookHF. In addition, an activity packet will be sent home with the copy of the book. The reading, related activities, and events will occur throughout the month of March and culminate in April.

As a result of this collaboration between our districts and public libraries, we are able to make this community reading experience extra meaningful and enriching for our families. The following are some examples of this collaboration and joint effort.

● Specially curated family activities for Region 6 and Litchfield families
● Grade level integration into classroom lessons across both districts
● After school collaborative book club for Wamogo and LHS students
● Public library scavenger hunts and family activities
● Raffle baskets and prizes for participation
● Community movie screening (date TBD for late April)
● Social media participation #2Districts1BookHiddenFigures
● High School student-led STEM demonstrations for elementary students
Everyone is welcome to participate in this exciting shared experience!
